George E. Johnson, age 92, passed away at his residence July 2nd, 2024. George was born September 11,1931 in Marion, Ohio as the son of the late George Wallace and Pearl (Fosnaugh) Johnson. He was the eldest of the six boys in a family of eleven children. George was a graduate of Claridon High School Class of 1949. Upon graduation he was employed by Erie Railroad where he worked until 1992 with 43 years of service. In May of 1952 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Holabird, Maryland after his basic training. After serving, he returned to Marion where his job with the Erie Railroad was waiting for him. On February 10th, 1951, he married Gladys (Valentine) Johnson and she survives him at home. George and Gladys spent many wonderful winters in Okeechobee, Florida and left behind many Christian friends there. George was a member of Caledonia Church of Christ since 1943 and the American Legion Post #162. In his younger days, George loved playing softball and singing Gospel music. He and Gladys were also volunteers with Meals on Wheels for over 15 years. They did everything together. Most of all, George loved his family and loved to laugh. He will be missed by his two precious children, Dianna (David) Rapp and David E. (Janie) Johnson, grandchildren; Allen (Elizabeth) Rapp, Regina (Steve) Hamilton, Michelle (Scott) Mitchell, Kara Rapp, eleven great-grandchildren; brothers; Robert, Milton, James and Ivan Johnson, sisters; Ruth Thacker, Leatha Mahaffey, Laura Underwood and Donna Valentine. He is preceded in death by brother, Dan Johnson and sister Mary McKee. Graveside and Military services for George will be held Monday, July 8th at 11:00 A.M. in Caledonia Cemetery with Mark Melroy officiating. All are welcome to attend.
