Gertrude Deskins, age 99, of Caledonia, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on August 19 2024, at The Wyndmoor of Marion. Born on February 17, 1925, in Grundy, Virginia, she led a life rich with love, laughter, and the moments that only family can bring. In 1945, she married the love of her life Andrew Deskins and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before his passing in 2012.
Gertrude was a good Christian lady, whose unwavering faith guided her through every chapter of her life. She embodied and kindness, qualities that endeared her to everyone fortunate enough to know her. A devoted mother and grandmother, her family was the center of her universe. She is survived by her son Bobby (Sandy) Deskins and her cherished grandchildren—Mary, Jarrod, Andrew, Robert, Jody, Rustie Nicole, and Ryan—with all her heart, taking immense joy in their lives and accomplishments.
Her passions were simple but profound. Gertrude found solace in gardening, nurturing vibrant flowers that brought color to her world. She adored playing in the dirt, a testament to her inherent love for nature. Fishing in the serene waters of Virginia also held a special place in her heart, where she spent countless peaceful hours enjoying the beauty around her. Additionally, her fondness for cats was well-known; she took great delight in raising kittens, filling her home with their playful antics and soft purrs.
Gertrude is preceded in death by her loving parents, William and Eva (Davis) Van Dyke, son, Bradley Deskins, sisters: Birch Morgan, May Vance, Nell Sloan, Goldie Elswick, brothers, Paul, Vic, Arlen and Ed Van Dyke. Their memories remain a cherished part of her story, one that she shared with love and fondness throughout her life.
A graveside service will be held on August 22, 2024, in Caledonia Cemetery in Caledonia, Ohio, at 1:00 PM. It will be a time for family and friends to gather, reflect on her remarkable life, and celebrate the legacy of love that Gertrude leaves behind.
Though her physical presence may no longer be with us, Gertrude's spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. Her life was a testament to love, faith, and the beauty of simple pleasures. She will be dearly missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to share in her journey.
