Sergeant First Class Richard Austin Berry Sr., (U.S. Army Retired) passed away on Saturday afternoon November 12th, 2011 at home. Dick was born October 18th, 1921 in Marion, Ohio the son of William G. Sr. & Ethel (Tyler) Berry. A Thirty year veteran, Sergeant Berry served throughout World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During his time service he traveled throughout world including most of Europe, parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand. After retiring from active duty in 1969 he was than employed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family services in North Central Ohio for 15 years. On June 15th, 1946 Dick married Wilma Walkins. They raised a family and remained together until she passed away in December 1985. He than married Alma Long on July 25th, 1988 and spent many happy years with her. She survives him at home. When he was able Dick loved to play golf and cards . He was also had an extensive display of collectable cars. He was a member of the AMVETS, Moose and Eagles in Tiffin and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Marion. Besides Alma, "Sarge" is survived by his four children, Richard Berry Jr. of Florida, Roger A. Berry of Paige Texas, Rebel Underwood of California and Thomas Ferstler II of Tiffin. Six grandchildren; Tammy, Tessa, Joseph, Jody, Kim & Erica. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth Berry of Marion and his sisters Deloris Price of Galion and Sylvia Lawson of Marion. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. A graveside service with military honors for SFC Richard Berry Sr. will be held on Friday November 18th, 2011 at 1:00 in the afternoon in Caledonia Cemetery by the Marion Veterans Council and soldiers of the United States Army.
