Virgil Eugene Gist age 92 of 6811 Twp Rd. 66 Edison passed away Thursday morning December 21st, 2006 in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. Virgil was born May 15th, 1914 I Morrow County. He was the son of the Late Otto E. and Edith P. (Weir) Gist. On Oct. 20th 1984 he married the former Twila McClaren - Shipman and she survives him at home. He was previously married to the late Doris Maynard. Virgil attended Caledonia School in his youth. He owned and operated Gist Elevator in Canaan Township for a period of 25 years. He was for a period of time a dealer for Cessna Airplanes and had operated Gist RV Sales since 1970. He was a dedicated member of the Canaan United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent for 43 years. He had also served as a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee and in various other capacities. Virgil was a licensed private pilot. His favorite past-time was flying and had logged thousands of hours in the air.
Besides his wife Twila, Virgil is survived by his children and their spouses; Ronald & Carol Gist of Edison, Lanny & Glenni Gist of Florida, Michael & Carolyn Gist of Florida,
Mary Ann Gist-Sou of Williamsburg, VA; Jon & Becky Shipman, Scott & Marlene Shipman and Jill & Todd Retterer. All of the Edison area. Sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two Sisters; Mrs. Mary Ellen Kline and Mrs. Harold (Inez) Van Meter of Marion. He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and two grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Virgil Gist will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday December 23rd, 2006 in the Canaan United Methodist Church with Pastor Howard Huston officiating. Interment will follow in Caledonia Cemetery. Friends may call at the Timson Allen & Melroy Funeral Home in Caledonia on Friday from 4 - 8.
